Measuring Theatre and Dance Performance

How can performance in the arts areas of Theatre and Dance be measured? To answer this question, our team has submitted a four-year funding proposal to the Assistance for Arts Education Development and Dissemination Grants Program (AAEDD) of the U.S. Department of Education to develop the national ZA Monitoring Artistry assessment for use within U.S. schools.

Through the inclusion of a diverse panel of assessment specialists, the project team seeks to address factors that may influence the shape, form, and content of the expressive artistic act. Grounded in the National Core Arts Standards, the proposed ZA Monitoring Artistryassessment will address:

  • different aesthetics;
  • diverse styles and genres of Theatre and Dance;
  • multilingual or multicultural performances; and
  • the needs of differently-abled learners.

The ZA Monitoring Artistry assessment will be but one element of a well-balanced approach to Theatre and Dance education.
